Donington Park Evening Track Day

Post by droberts » Mon Jun 12, 2017 8:09 am

Hi Folks
James and I will be doing the Donington Park track day on Wednesday evening (14th Jun).
It's really a test to see if we have resolved an overheating issue and a few other bits; but if we get chance there may be a few passenger laps :D

Cheers
Dave

Just a brief update: limited track time - unfortunately we fell foul of noise regs - 98dB drive by. We got some useful test runs but couldn't complete the evening. The Tomcat didn't throw its water all over the floor, but was still running very, very hot.

Net result, no racing at the weekend, but at least I got to enjoy Le Mans on TV... what a finish by Aston Martin on the last lap!

Sorry to hear about the gearbox, and shame we didn't get to chat for longer.

Yep H, I know we've failed before but couldn't remember our previous drive-by figure and we needed to test somewhere before the weekend. Limit was 98dB and we hit 98.8 on first attempt. 98.4 on 2nd attempt (with track day silencer). 3rd attempt (we packed track day silencer with steel wool) and it worked - James managed a clear session okay. But next session it must have worked its way loose as we hit 99.1dB - game over!

Only got 4 runs, but it was enough to determine the car was still running too hot for Brands Hatch.

What have you ruled out and what are your current thoughts about the overheating problem? You need to find a standard back box which you can throw on when you're having noise limit issues. We don't find it makes a massive performance dent on our track slag but gets us down to ~90dB.

Hi Add
It gets v.hot when really pushing it. Engine man is convinced its not head gasket. Pressure good on all cylinders and no evidence of air leaks. The size of the new intercooler has been reduced and we can up the fuel pressure which helped. Coolant sensors have been changed, and also have a mechanical water and oil pressure gauge in place (the oil pressure light must be faulty wiring/plug somewhere, as the oil sensor has also been changed and the mechanical gauge shows good pressure). The std water temp gauge continues to work intermittently (again suspect wiring, but have mechanical backup now). It's not as bad as Mallory, but still not right. The MEMS diagnostics show the ECU is getting an accurate coolant temp (as it matches the mechanical gauge, and it also shows air inlet temp is being received okay - we'll do some leaf blower tests with that tomorrow ;-). The diagnostics also show the ECU is getting lambda sensor signals (does anyone know if the Rover unit is a wideband sensor?) Anyway I have a new Bosch sensor which we can try.

We know it was running lean, I suspect the fuel pump is being pushed too hard under load - I had trouble back in 2007 with std pump too (at Cadwell). Anyway a new Walbro pump is going in tomorrow then onto rolling road to check accurate AFR. I don't really want the expense of replacing the ECU, as I'm not after big BHP. Hoping we can adjust fuel pressure with bigger injectors to get a good air to fuel ratio.

Cheers
Dave

fingers crossed you will get it sorted, ps we used to tape up the head light inlet and it bought the noise down a little..

didnt you take the heater matrix out ? might it worth be refitting it . will give you a extra small rad . will give you more volume as well.

Yep, Dave Nixon suggested the same, but have run without heater matrix (and hoses) for years. However, more tests point toward the problem
being the intercooler blocking too much air to rad, so Radtec have moved it to bottom of radiator and changed the core to a freer flowing design. Looks promising, will let you know how it goes ;-)
