N143 FDH - Minor Overhall

Post by Stig » Wed Aug 15, 2012 10:35 pm

This going to be N143 FDH's home for a few days.

Front arms to be replaced/poly bushed
CV Outer boots to be replaced

I've never done any work on this car before so I'm learning. Thanks to the tutorial section and me asking daft questions on here, I've managed to complete one side after 3 half days work.

I took some quick snaps along the way on my phone (not great, sorry)

Image
New poly bushed arm loosely in place, CV and boot off.

Image
CV off and cleaned. Looks in good nick, no scoring of ball bearings and didn't give me any problems previously so it went back on after being packed with grease supplied with the new boot.

Image
All back together, just before I put the retaining clips on the boot.

Things I found most difficult were:

Getting the old arm off as the 18 year old ball joint nut had rusted solid. Ended up cutting it off.

Undoing the hub nut. Undid the stake OK but was on unbelievably tight!

Pushing the driveshaft back over the circlip, took ages, very fiddly!

Anyway, I got there and hopefully the other side will be a lot easier now!

What's next? Well, MOT next week so we shall see what gets flagged (probably rust taking hold on the sills)

Looks like you're doing a good job.

The problem with any older car is most bolts are likely to be seized or rusted solid. The dismantling and stripping out is always the hardest bit and makes the job take much longer than it should. Very good for relieving stress though, through brute force and a few choice words ;)

Yep, much easier. Did the whole side in less than a day. Waiting for the next challenge now!

First part complete. New sills, repaired arches, front suspension work all now complete. Fresh MOT ticket, polished and waxoyled for the winter!

Time to start planning phase 2, I'm determined to have this car back to mint as it was when I got it all those years ago!
