race report from donington park

Post by martinhodge » Thu Aug 01, 2019 3:18 pm

well thought id put up some photos and information on donington park .

this was my first ever race weekend where i would actually be competing

first off at this event was 8 coupes . the most that has been seen on track in a race meet since a very long time

both races and qualifying was on the Sunday . so that meant we could all get there Saturday and get the car though scrutineering and sort any issues

luckily my car went through with no issues what so ever.

Saturday evening kay and her dad chris put on a feast ( hog roast ) for all the drivers and family.

for me personally the weekend went as well as i was hoping

i qualified last basically . which i wasn't that fussed about as i had previous issues with my emerald ecu that quite honestly due to lack of time on my front i hadn't really tested to see if the issue was cured .

last time i used the car the ecu was resetting on me after a about 8 to ten mins

after sending the ecu back to emerald . we concluded that it was set up to the wrong flywheel they had mapped it to a 2 gap . not a 4 gap on the engine .

normally on a normal ecu set up the car just simply wouldn't run .

but on my car due to having a wide band and emerald it would correct the map . until such a point that the error log was full . then it would just reset to clear the log.

which basically meant that the engine would just dye unexpectedly .lol

which isnt a good thing on a track day . let alone on a race day where i would hopefully have some one on my rear .

so i was very happy to be at the back .

greg hall was out in force with his camera and got some cracking pictures

race one went ok for me .

i found a few issues with my car

the car was to low at the front drivers side so it was rubbing on the wheel which me and rich buckley sorted with a hammer by folding the arch over. but its still to low . so the car needs to come up .

for some reason the car didnt want to handle at all . id of said my road car felt like it handled better . this is probably due to me not having enough experience at race speeds in the coupe more than anything else. and no confidence in its breaks or car it self

i also found that power steering doesnt work below 3 k rpm . and when i got home i found that the steering rack had worked its way loose on all its bolts .

this i think was down to me power coating the subframe .

i should of taken all the power coat off where the bolts sat .

hopefully with the power steering sorted and a few more tweaks to the suspension the car will be where it should be .

but touch wood the engine pulled hard and revved freely and quickly . she loves spending time about 5 k rpm . ( i think its run in now lol . ( engines only done 70 miles lol )

but i think i need to get alot more seat time in this car and alot more experience under my belt.

if any ones thinking of getting to racing . id say do it . you only live once .

the weekend was a huge eye opener for me and i enjoyed it very much . and the guys in the mg cup are very helpful and supportive

over all the weekend went very well with mike williams in his metro winning race one . just in front of richard buckley in his tomcat . and richard buckley winning race 2 battling with the metro all the way

Great write up Mart, seems your issues are all easy fixes that are down to lack of running time.

Whens the next one ?

Well done Mart. It has taken you three race cars to get out there but you have finally done it!

Hope to be at the next race. To offer encouragement and advice obviously.... :-|

next mg race is oulton park i will be there but not competing . its a expensive hobby to do and quite simply oulton park is a good 5 hours each way for me with the trailor .

i rekon a weekend is about 1000 pound a weekend easy .

and i really need to crack on with this house !

to give you a idea of costs .

entry fee £400
fuel getting there and back £120
fuel used in race car £50
transponder hire £30
food etc over weekend £50 pound roughly

and thats with out issues or break downs . and where and tear on the car
